Rifiutiamo, una volta cresciuti, alcuni candidati per il matrimonio non perché sono sbagliati per noi ma perché sono troppo giusti – troppo equilibrati, maturi, comprensivi, affidabili – dato che nel nostro cuore, tutto questo ci sembra sbagliato.
Sposiamo la persona sbagliata perché NON ASSOCIAMO L’ESSERE AMATI CON IL SENTIRCI FELICI

Facciamo errori anche PERCHE’ CI SENTIAMO SOLI. Nessuno può scegliere un partner in modo lucido quando gli sembra insopportabile l’idea di rimanere single. Dobbiamo affrontare il fatto che dobbiamo passare tanti anni in solitudine per essere selettivi: altrimenti rischiamo di amare l’idea di essere fidanzati più del partner che sceglieremo.

Per finire, ci sposiamo per fare in modo che una bella sensazione continui nel tempo: ci immaginiamo che il matrimonio ci aiuterà a mantenere la gioia che abbiamo provato quando abbiamo pensato per la prima volta di ricevere la proposta: magari eravamo a Venezia, in barca, con il tramonto che scintillava sul mare, chiacchierando di aspetti della nostra anima che nessuno aveva mai colto prima, con la prospettiva di una cena romantica poco dopo. Ci sposiamo per far sì che queste sensazioni rimangano permanenti ma non ci rendiamo conto che non ci sono vere connessioni tra queste sensazioni e l’istituzione del matrimonio.

La buona notizia è che non importa se ci rendiamo conto di avere sposato la persona sbagliata.
Non dobbiamo abbandonare lui o lei solo per l’idea Romantica di matrimonio sulla quale si è basata la cultura occidentale degli ultimi 250 anni: che un essere perfetto esiste che in grado di soddisfare tutte le nostre esigenze e ogni nostro desiderio.
Dobbiamo scambiare questa visione Romantica con la tragica consapevolezza che OGNI ESSERE UMANO CI RENDERA’ FRUSTRATI, ARRABBIATI, DELUSI – e noi faremo lo stesso con lui o lei (pur senza malizia). Non ci sarà mai una fine al nostro senso di vuoto e di incompletezza. Ma niente di tutto ciò è inusuale o è una ragione di divorzio.

La persona è fatta per noi non è quella che condivide ogni nostro gusto e interesse (quella persona non esiste), ma la persona che sa negoziare le differenze di gusto in modo intelligente – la persona che è brava nell’essere in disaccordo con noi.

Piuttosto che una certa idea nozionale di perfetta complementarietà, è la capacità di tollerare le differenze con generosità che è il vero indicatore di una persona “non eccessivamente sbagliata”.

La compatibilità è una conquista di amore; non deve essere la sua premessa.

Il Romanticismo  non ci è stato utile: si tratta di una filosofia dura. Ha fatto passare tante cose che attraversiamo durante il matrimonio come spaventose. Finiamo soli e convinti che la nostra unione, con le sue imperfezioni, non sia “normale”.
Dovremmo imparare ad accettare le “erroneità” nostre e del partner, cercando sempre di adottare verso esse una prospettiva più indulgente e divertente.

L avvicinarsi del Natale vi rende inquieti? Pensate solo alla caducità della vita, alla vuotezza delle feste, all’inutilità del consumismo che ci circonda? Intervistatore: Last year you made your debut on Instagram and were briefly kicked off after your first post. Now that you’ve been reinstated and you get to post drawings of cats, how are you feeling about it?

Grace Coddington: I hate Instagram, actually. I think it really interferes with people’s lives and things and it’s pathetic how everyone’s photographing everything they’re eating all the time. Everybody uses it instead of reading the newspapers these days. People want you to know that they’re holidaying in Greece. I mean, really. The first one I posted, my whole account got taken down because I was naked, which was ironic: It’s a goddamn cartoon!

La frase sottostante mi ha colpita particolarmente

Trovo sia verissimo: spesso quando si chiede “chi è la tua icona di stile?” molte ragazze rispondono “Audrey Hepburn” e l ‘ho sempre trovata una risposta assurda: oggi nessuno mette abiti da cocktail da giorno, il mezzo tacco con la gonna al ginocchio su una ragazza è ridicolo, non si usano borsette a mano né tantomeno fili di perle sotto i 30. Trovo Audrey di grande ispirazione per il suo impegno umanitario, il suo totale disinteresse verso la fama e la sua ironia ma di certo non si può dire che mi voglia vestire come lei.
